I realised some time ago that I often prefer rough recordings to polished ones. So the idea behind this album was to assemble a collection of songs/demos – written over a ten-year period – in a live setting, with all the inherent risks of blunder and imposed technical limitations. In short, the entire album is composed of live takes recorded at home using a basic phone voice recorder app. Errors and imperfections make us human, and I wanted the finished recording to reflect some of the rawness of the very human feelings that inspired the tracks.

The sessions weren’t completely without professional recording trickery; some tracks were recorded with my phone resting on a magazine under a hat, for example.

The result is rough round the edges but it’s time to let go of it for now.
